Whocast #391 – …und der Fluch des Urins

Da fühlt man sich mal genötigt die Emma zu kaufen und was findet man, wider Erwarten, wenn man sie aufschlägt? Alte, weiße Männer… Pfui. Aber zu früh gefreut, denn die Herren sind nur dazu da, euch zu erzählen, wie geil das mal wird, wenn sie eine Frau werden.
Was? Sowas kann es doch nicht geben? Na dann passt mal auf. In der heutigen Episode des Whocasts werfen Harald und Raphael einen Blick auf die Null-Nummer (no puns intended) der Dreizehnten-Doctor-Comic-Reihe aus dem Hause Panini und finden tatsächlich die ein oder andere Überraschung.

Außerdem gibt es ein paar Dinge in eigener Sache, die wir unter “We want you” zusammenfassen können, Geschenke und Post und für die Hörer unter euch, die mit Doctor Who wenig anfangen können, driften wir auch ein wenig zu den drei Fragezeichen ab.

Und hier die Aussage bezüglich der BBC mal im Wortlaut:

Because so much is riding on DW – one of its very few remaining ‘super-Brands’ – the BBC will never admit it, but the DISASTER that has been Series 11 has them in a state of almost panic. True, the OPENING EP was the ‘highest rated etc etc…’ (only to be expected due to the novelty of the sex change) but thereafter the viewing figures (almost literally) fell off a cliff (HALVING over the course of the 10 episodes) – that has NEVER happened before – and resulting in overall viewing figures about the same as Series 10 (the lowest in the ‘New Series’ run). Given that the whole ‘Jodie shake-up’ was intended to improve on those figures, it was a hugely disappointing failure. Of course, the BBC marketing team and it’s ‘shill’ supporters focus on that ‘record’ Ep 1 figure and avoid the Series average to avoid drawing attention to the truth. Merchandising has suffered similarly – the ‘exclusive’ “13” Barbie doll – far from selling out (as any Limited Edition Barbie usually would) – is currently on ‘remaindered’ sale in comic book stores; the Character Options 5” figure has sold less than 0.2% of the numbers achieved by the 10th Doctor (DT) equivalent after Series 2; and the ‘Abbeyshot’ (official) replica of 13’s coat was cancelled due to lack of advance orders. Even DWM circulation is down hugely – hence the current generous ‘subscription offers’. As for the show itself, the S11 changes have so far removed it (a fact which the BBC and ‘shills’ attempt to deny by ‘changing’ the past) from its origins that, from my POV, it simply isn’t the same show – and, after 55 years, I just stopped watching half-way through. The BBC is terrified of the way media is evolving (Amazon/Netflix) and obsessed with increasing its ‘Yoof’ audience, seemingly regardless of the reaction of its established (older) audience. As is only to be expected, before ‘green-lighting’ the ‘Jodie experiment’, the BBC conducted specialist research to ‘second -guess’ the likely response. (They knew only too well that the plethora of changes would be too much for some – hopefully only a few – established fans, but counted on replacing/superseding them with ‘vibrant’ young ‘newbies’). Unfortunately the BBC seems to have placed rather too much faith in a certain vocal minority, and jumped rather too late onto the #metoo bandwagon. The backlash has been INFINITELY greater than they expected – having effectively ‘ripped fandom in two’ – but, again, they CANNOT ever admit error, and so must continue what they have started – albeit with ‘Judoon (and other classic icon) sops’ to try to ‘woo back’ the disenfranchised. After Series 12, Chibnall & Whittaker will be gone. There will follow an hiatus for a year or two, and then a new team will take over, with a male ‘sexy’ (Matt/David) Doctor. But I rather fear by then it may be too late…
